The S’pore Musical Boom

The Business Times looks at the growth of Singapore’s musical theatre scene and interviews LASALLE College of the Arts, which launched its Musical Theatre programme — the first in Asia — in 2004.

Since then, LASALLE has nurtured numerous talents such as Elena Wang who has starred in West End and Broadway musicals, Mina Kaye, Seong Hui Xuan and Benjamin Chow, who all nabbed awards at the ST Life! Theatre Awards for stage musical performances.

From School Project To Big Stage

When Junaidi Kusnong, then-LASALLE College of the Arts BA(Hons) Music student, roped in several musician friends for his final-year recital in 2015, all he wanted was to get a good grade.

In the interview with The Straits Times, he revealed that the band started getting invites to gigs at local festivals including 100 + 50 Festival, Esplanade's Baybeats and Mosaic Music Weekend, after being invited to do an encore performance at LASALLE's Lunchtime Concert Series.

A Musical Without Actors

Canvas Conversations is a four-piece electronic band that has been heavily lauded by industry insiders for their creation of highly textured soundscapes. European Union Film Festival

Embodying the passion for filmmaking told from the Singapore perspective, The Puttnam School of Film collaborated with the European Union Film Festival (EUFF), the oldest foreign film festival in Singapore, to screen 29 short films by students alongside each of the EUFF feature films.

Encapsulated within the student films were core issues of national, cultural and personal identity, adding to the SG50 celebrations for the EUFF as they marked their 25th successful year in Singapore.

High Demand For Arts Graduates

Berita Harian reports that nine out of 10 graduates of LASALLE College of the Arts are successful in finding employment based on a study conducted late last year on more than 700 former students.

It also highlights the speech of Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Social and Family Development, Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, for the recent Committee of Supply Debate 2017 where he shared that "around 6,000 students" have pursued an arts education in 2016.
