Angela Chong And Goh Abigail Named As 2017 Chan-Davies Art Prize Winners

2017 LASALLE College of the Arts’ graduates Angela Chong (MA Fine Arts) and Goh Abigail (BA(Hons) Fine Arts) were announced as the winners of the Chan-Davies Art Prize on 18 May, in conjunction with the opening of The LASALLE Show 2017 Exhibition.

There were 10 applications from the MA Fine Arts graduating class at LASALLE, of which four were shortlisted and interviewed; and 18 applications from the BA(Hons) Fine Arts graduating class, of which five were shortlisted and interviewed.

Buried Interest Revived Due To ‘Long-Term Goal’

BA(Hons) Fine Arts alumnus Izzad Radzali Shah speaks about his journey as an artist, from initially losing interest in painting to rediscovering his passion after a trip to Jogjakarta in 2015, where he was inspired by the young artists he met. His realisation that art could be a means of expressing views on social issues, or understanding of the Malay identity in Singapore, spurred him to create a prolific body of work that led to his first solo exhibition Long-Term Goal in LASALLE's Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore.

Four Young Artist Award Winners Inherit the Power of Art

Visual artist Kray Chen, and independent dancer Yarra Ileto, are two LASALLE alumni who were conferred the Young Artist Award on 24 October 2017. Along with other fellow winners, music conductor Wong Kah Chun, and poet Joshua Ip, the four recipients received their award from President Halimah Yacob in a ceremony at the Istana. Lianhe Zaobao spoke to each of the winners individually to learn more about their practice.

Jerome Lim was the valedictorian at LASALLE’s 31st Convocation, and this came by no mean feat. In an interview with TODAY, he shared how besides juggling school work, he also took the time to represent LASALLE at competitions, and undertake internships during semester breaks. Student Wants To Change Perceptions Through Fashion

School of Fashion graduand Sulis Awalluden shares with Berita Harian that her graduation collection, “Glistening Within”, aims to change the common misconception that wearing hijab or dressing modestly is outdated and traditional. Her collection subtly incorporates Islamic elements such as the crescent and stars in their design, while taking inspiration from minimalist styles of the 90s. Sulis is the first LASALLE fashion graduand to focus on modest clothing.

Designing Clothes For People With Disabilities

School of Fashion graduands Elisa Lim, Ethrisha Liaw and Caroline Justine share with Lianhe Zaobao their experience designing functional yet fashionable clothes for wheelchair users. The garments in their graduation collection have been designed with carefully selected breathable fabrics and special features that allow the user to get dressed while still seated.

Graduands incorporate disability considerations into fashion for the first time

Three international brands – Swarovski, Converse and Takasago – will collaborate with LASALLE College of the Arts to give graduating fashion students a boost as they step into the working industry. The collaboration for the graduation showcase involves SGD100,000 worth of products to be incorporated into the students’ collections – the largest external investment in a fashion showcase thus far – and invaluable consultation with the respective brands’ in-house product designers.
