$30,000 Gallery Prize for Rising Artists

The Chan-Davies Art Prize, given to graduating artists from the Lasalle College of the Arts every year, has been awarded to Singapore-based visual artists Dipali Gupta and Gemma Kearney this year. Winning the fourth edition of the annual Chan-Davies prize, they each receive $15,000 in cash and a month-long exhibition at the Gillman Barracks gallery.

Sim Chi Yin: We are contented to leave the thinking to our government

Award-winning documentary photographer Sim Chi Yin's latest exhibition, Most People Were Silent, poses questions about our human interaction with nuclear weapons through the documentation of both historical and present day nuclear sites. In this interview, she shares about her past experiences in North Korea, stories behind the photos in her current exhibition, as well as her plans for future research.

Most People Were Silent runs until 10 October 2018, at the Earl Lu Gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts.

Ministers and MPs Dressed in Uniquely Singaporean NDP Attire, Designed in Collaboration with Local Designers

Every year, for the past three years, a graduate from LASALLE's School of Fashion has been working with Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, to design his NDP outfits for the past three years. This practice began when Mr Baey Yam Keng started attending The LASALLE Show Exhibition three years ago.

Singaporean artist Shubigi Rao in running for $60,000 Signature Art Prize

Congratulations to MA Fine Arts alumna and part-time lecturer Shubigi Rao for being nominated for the triennial S$60,000 Signature Art Prize! Visit Shubigi's installation, titled Pulp: A Short Biography Of The Banished Book. Vol I: Written In The Margins (2014–2016), which is on display at the National Museum of Singapore from 25 May to 2 September 2018.

LASALLE alumni put their shine on NDP 2018 Theme Song

It's the video taking the internet by storm! We Are Singapore, the official music video of the National Day Parade (NDP) 2018 saw the involvement of two prominent LASALLE alumni. BA(Hons) Film alumnus Boo Junfeng provided his creative direction and vision, while BA(Hons) Arts Management alumna Sharon Ng co-produced the inspiring video.

These entries discuss three recent Thai films centered on the legendary Thai ghost Mae Nak, the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth, but returns to the world of the living to be with her husband. Nang Nak (1999), Nak (2008), and Pee Mak (2013) are each described with reference to their thematic resonances and their importance to Thai film history. Thai Cinema: The Complete Guide is the first English-language book to be devoted solely to the topic of Thai cinema, which has revived and gained new world-wide recognition since the late 1990s.

Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), as an artist and a woman, has a unique international appeal. Her instantly recognizable work draws extensively on her life and her extraordinarily personal reflections upon it. On Kahlo's death, her husband, Diego Rivera (1886-1957), ordered that her most private possessions be locked away until 15 years after his death. The bathroom in which her belongings were stored in fact remained unopened until 2004. Through this incredible archive, Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up gives readers a unique window into Kahlo's life.
