Exotic Tropicana, Flight, Heaven on Earth, Gloria and Flight of Fantasy. These are names of intricately designed kaftans created by LASALLE’s BA(Hons) Fashion Design & Textiles students: Leong Yaowen, Edward Chan, Vikas Dayal, Edison Wong, Ivanna Cinora Kuswara and Herlianti Iskandar Setiawan. The kaftans are on display at DFS Galleria Singapore as part of its spring/summer theme ‘Passage to Paradise’.

Organised by DFS Galleria, this project required the level 2 and level 3 students to conceptualise and produce an original Kaftan for either men or women inspired by the theme. The young designers drew upon various inspirations, ranging from fairy tales to peacock plumes, to create luxurious garments that hint of an exotic sojourn in paradise.

DFS Galleria Singapore’s collaboration with local art students is a continuing effort by the store to engage with the local community. DFS Venture Singapore Managing Director Craig McKenna said, ‘There is a lot of young talent in Singapore and we want to encourage their creativity in whatever way we can.’ Besides students from LASALLE College of the Arts, DFS Galleria is also showcasing works of Batik art by students from Orchid Park Secondary School.

The kaftans will be displayed on the fourth floor of the DFS flagship store from January to March 2013. The public can vote for three winners out of the five shortlisted designs. All voters will get a chance to win the kaftan of their choice. Results will be announced on 1 April and three designers will stand to win cash and prizes of up to S$1000.
