For their first place finish at the Space Nurtures 2013 design competition, LASALLE graduates Chen Shufei (22) and Adeline Yeo Xiuyun (24), BA(Hons) Interior Design, Class of 2013, were rewarded with an all-expenses-paid study trip to France and Switzerland in August.

Their win was celebrated at an award ceremony held at the 100% Design Singapore exhibition where they also shared their experiences from the week-long design workshop in Boisbuchet, France, sponsored by the renowned Vitra furniture company. They also had the opportunity to spend a week on attachment at Vitra in Switzerland.

100% Design Singapore showcases the latest trends in interiors and spans the gamut from lighting, bathrooms, and kitchens, to the best in floor and wall coverings, as well as exquisitely designed furniture by professionals from Southeast Asia. The winning entries, Camo by Shufei and Out of the Woods by Adeline, were on display at 100% Design Singapore alongside entries from the other finalists.

"We were given a unique chance to work with professionals from all over the world and from different fields," said Adeline. “The experience has pushed me as a designer to look at new possibilities."

Highlights of the trip included mentoring sessions with award-winning 3D designer Ron Gilad, as well as viewing and learning more about Vitra’s classic design icons such as Frank Gehry’s Vitra Design Museum, Tadao Ando’s conference pavilion, the VitraHaus by Herzog and the Eames office.

Held in June 2013, the second Space Nurtures competition was co-organised by Space Furniture, Vitra and the Design Council Singapore. To enter the contest, budding designers had to reinterpret Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Vegetal chair, a piece inspired by the idea of a chair as an organic matter, sprouting from the ground like a plant.
