The Design Communication student team of Tannia Sari Surijadjaja and Ahmad Fauzan did Singapore proud when they won a Silver Pencil award in the prestigious annual One Club Young Ones Competition (USA).

One of the most acclaimed international advertising, interactive and design student competitions, dating back to 1986, the Young Ones Competition offers students across the globe the opportunity to create original work, build their portfolios and vie for an award. With entries from over 125 schools across 31 countries in 2014 alone (and celebrated each year at Creative Week in New York), the competition exists to recognise the cream of the crop of creative students.

Commenting on their entry, Fresh Fashion, as a response to the challenge to create a new branding concept for global fashion brand, Organic by John Patrick, Ahmad shared, “We were inspired by the clothing company's ethical choice of growing their own materials, so we re-imagined the company as a farm, but more surrealistic.”

This is LASALLE’s first time making its mark at the Young Ones Competition, with seven other students from four teams also winning Merit Awards.

“It is a great honour for LASALLE to fly the Singapore flag high at this highly acclaimed competition for young creatives,” said Nur Hidayah, Dean, Faculty of Design. “We have always aimed to nurture thinking designers with an international outlook, and the results speak for themselves. We are very proud that the works of our students are now recognised alongside award-winning entries from the School of Visual Arts, Parsons the New School for Design and Hongik University, to name but a few prestigious design institutions from all over the world. LASALLE has truly proven that we are among the best,” she added.

Tannia, who is graduating this year, said, “My LASALLE education has taught me to be a more independent and critical designer. I plan to pursue my design passion by stepping out of my comfort zone and looking for a variety of design experiences to support my cognitive and creative processes.”

Fellow graduand Ahmad added that the collaborative learning environment in LASALLE has made the greatest impact on his growth as a designer, and he’s learned a lot from his peers.

Cash prizes are awarded to the Gold, Silver and Bronze Pencil winning teams, respectively. The Pencil winners are awarded at the annual One Show Young Ones Education Festival awards ceremony and finalists are published in the One Show Annual as well as online in the Awards Archive.
