In the 2014 edition of the Art of Giving, LASALLE, in collaboration with Wheelock Properties, presented a collection of unique gifts inspired by local traditional motifs and nostalgic design icons.
The group of artists, made up of students and alumni of LASALLE’s Faculty of Design and Faculty of Fine Arts, created contemporary gifts and objects-of-desire which reflected Singapore’s multicultural heritage and local lifestyles. The diverse artistic creations included stylish wearable fashion accessories and useable home decorations made using a variety of materials that range from paper and cloth to acrylic and ceramic.
The public was invited to vote for their favourite gift by visiting the exhibition at Scotts Square or via online. In recognition of the artists’ creative excellence and craftsmanship, the Wheelock Art Prize of S$5,000 was awarded to the creators of the artwork with the highest number of votes.
“Although the artists may possess different cultural backgrounds, they have researched and grasped well-loved and familiar designs from Singapore’s heritage and created distinctive works which surprise and delight us during this festive season. New materials and methods of production have also been used to create playful and charming tributes to the myriad of colours and motifs found in Singapore’s material cultural heritage,” commented Milenko Prvacki, Senior Fellow at LASALLE.
