E. Audition Guidelines

GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Please be at the audition venue 15 minutes before your alloted time. It is estimated that each audition will take approximately 20 minutes. However, please allow for ample time before and after your alloted time should the individual auditions exceed their expected duration.
  • Dress appropriately for your audition. Wear clothes and shoes you feel comfortable in. You are NOT required to bring costumes.
  • You may bring a bottle of water with you should your throat become dry during the audition.
  • The audition will be followed by an interview.

ACTING

  • Acting - You must perform two monologues from memory in English, not exceeding three minutes in duration. One of the pieces will be from Shakespeare. The other will be from a professionally performed play of the 20th or 21st century.
  • Singing - You should be prepared to sing. This need not be a thoroughly rehearsed whole song, but a simply piece like Happy Birthday or a Christmas carol (e.g. Silent Night). The aim is not to assess the quality of your singing as a whole, but to test your capacity to judge musical divisions, to hold a tune. It is a test of your hearing more than anything else. People admitted into the course need not be accomplished singers.
  • Dance - You are NOT required to prepare any dance material for this initial audition. However, you will undergo a physical warm-up that may involve some dance elements.
  • Callback - At the completion of your acting auditions, you may be asked to return at a later time for possible group work, further work on one or both of your monologues, improvisation and discussion. It may be later in the day of your audition or at another time. Please allow approximately four hours for this callback.

Things to consider

  • Be certain you understand your material well. Even an obviously talented person will not be admitted to the course if their preparation has been slovenly or slight.
  • Acting - Choose an acting piece (at least one of them) that is appropriate for your age and experience. Use minimum 'props' and only if they are essential to the piece. If possible, read the entire play from which your speech is taken.

What we are looking for

We are not looking for accomplished actors. We are looking for people with the requisite natural ability to be guided toward careers as professional actors. We are looking for people who can undertake our rigorous course with enthusiasm and generosity.

Acting is a very exacting and demanding art, and requires people with exceptional stamina, versatility and skill. As the programme is predominantly practice-based, your ability to meet these demands will be considered when we choose prospective students.

AS ALL CLASSES ARE CONDUCTED IN ENGLISH IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL APPLICANTS HAVE AN ADVANCED LEVEL OF BOTH WRITTEN AND SPOKEN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Things to consider

  • Please be prepared to announce the title of your songs and speeches and give a brief explanation if you feel it is needed.
  • Be certain you understand your material well. You must be able to convey the character and journey in both singing and acting pieces.

Singing

  • Choose songs and acting pieces that are appropriate for your age and experience.
  • Choose songs that are not at the extremes of your vocal range. We prefer to hear performances of works that you feel comfortable with rather than something that will cause you difficulty.

Acting

  • Choose an acting piece that is appropriate for your age and experience.
  • Use minimum props and only if they are essential to the piece.
  • If possible, read the entire play from which your speech is taken. This will give you a greater understanding when performing a small section of the play.

What we are looking for?

The assessment of your audition will be based on your ability to show a grounding in technique and flexibility in taking directions, as well as the desire to take risks as a performer.
