Video art arises from the intersection of photography, expanded media, cinema, television, popular culture, digital art and sound art. It describes a territory in which the boundaries between commercial and artistic endeavour have blurred, giving rise to a versatile trans-genre art form that lends itself to a variety of applications. The hybrid nature of video art is especially exciting now, as the discipline seems set to ride the combined push in the creative sectors of Interactive Design Media (IDM), Film and Contemporary Art.

The video art programme is a holistic three-year journey that explores video as an artistic tool of expression. It looks at the changing landscape in which technology and art constantly merge and evolve with other disciplines, and is aimed at students who wish to develop a broad-based understanding of contemporary video art practice in a multicultural and global environment.

Exploration is the key word in this course. Through a diverse menu of modules, students are encouraged to define their own version of video art and emerge as video artists with a strong eye for culturally relevant themes. They will lead and anticipate the future trends of video art and strive to understand traditional and experimental media practice in preparation for the creative industries.

At Level One, students are introduced to the basic concepts and aesthetics of video art, interpreting given themes with an emphasis on reflection, experimentation and the creative process. Level Two pushes video art towards expanded forms, into video sculpture, video art installation, multiple projection, mobile screens and performance videos, and engage in cross-faculty collaborations. By Level Three, students begin to construct their own definition of video art by working on independent, self-directed projects and are able to contextualise their work in the larger historical setting of video and media art.
