Film is a moving force. And in the hands of a skilled filmmaker, a formidable tool for transcending barriers, impacting society and capturing the zeitgeist. As a medium it reaches beyond the screen, serving as a platform for ideas, reflection and public discourse through the act of visual storytelling. With a growing appreciation for Asian film today, the stage is set for a new generation of visionaries to come to the fore.
This programme answers the call of the local and international film community, which seeks practitioners with ability, knowledge and diversity of experience, as well as the capacity for creativity and originality. Through a practice-based approach spanning traditional and digital methods, students are inspired to communicate within a cinematographic framework and explore various narrative environments, such as feature films, documentaries, mini series and sitcoms, with an emphasis on professional film and broadcast standards.
In light of current advances in film technology, the course is structured with a focus on contemporary high definition formats and digital post-production techniques, ensuring that students are well-positioned for industry placements upon graduation. Students will also be encouraged to draw on other disciplines across the College and embark on meaningful collaborations in their work.
Level One establishes the groundwork for filmmaking and presents the theoretical approaches needed for the study of film. Students will be introduced to the disciplines of screenwriting, directing and producing underscored by critical film studies. Level Two develops the practical and academic work begun in the previous level and takes the collaborative process of film practice further with a short film project. Central to Level Three are the complex demands of professional filmmaking. Work undertaken in this year combines students’ developed artistic approach and technical skills, culminating in an original thesis film.
