On its surface, fashion is costume. Yet as a discipline it has taken on a much deeper its socio-cultural significance. The role of the fashion designer today has transcended mere garment creation: it encompasses visionary, artist, trendsetter and social architect, capable of defining and redefining the stylistic and aesthetic cues of the age.

The programme provides students with both a holistic understanding of the culture, context and professional practice of fashion, as well as a specialist perspective: students begin sharing common modules before choosing one of four pathways in Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Management and Fashion Textiles, where they will develop, implement and realise creative concepts and marketable products.

The Fashion Design pathway aims to develop in students an innovative and contemporary approach to fashion design. Workshops with international visiting practitioners, group critiques and tutorials equip students with the skills and knowledge to operate as creative designers and leaders in the fashion industry. Students will also experiment with inventive design methods and garment construction techniques to realise their fashion concepts. Industry-linked projects will further prepare fashion students for the newly expanding creative industry and market of South East Asian within a global context.

Level One grounds students in key concepts and theories in fashion and introduces a range of technical skills and creative practice. It establishes its methodological and knowledge base in Semester One before allowing students to specialise in Semester Two. Level Two of the programme directs students in the creative application of technical skills and knowledge towards a specific fashion market. It includes a wide range of projects which expose students to teamwork, individual creativity and industry-focused partnerships. Level Three focuses on independent creative practice geared towards industry. Students are expected to negotiate and realise their own projects and to collaborate with peers from other pathways for innovative and exciting outcomes.

Teaching Methods: You will attend lectures, critiques, workshops, seminars, tutorials and practical presentations. There will be regular guest lectures by international designers who will bring valuable experience and advice. Engaging in studio work and group and solo projects will also become part of your student life. There will also be frequent industry visits and opportunities for market research.

Entry Requirements: You need to meet the minimum academic requirements and are required to attend an interview with portfolio presentation to demonstrate your creative potential. Please refer to entry requirements for more details.
