In an age where the medium is the message, those who shape fashion and its trends are those with the ability to perpetuate images, create dialogue and bring ideas to the masses. Fashion communicators are in that position. The discipline of Fashion Communication, with its focus on fashion journalism and the study and creation of the fashion image as seen through advertising campaigns, editorial magazines and print, empowers practitioners to influence, debate and support the evolution of fashion.
The programme provides students with both a holistic understanding of the culture, context and professional practice of fashion, as well as a specialist perspective: students begin sharing common modules before choosing one of four pathways in Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Management and Fashion Textiles, where they will develop, implement and realise creative concepts and marketable products.
Students in the Fashion Communication specialism will be introduced to the creation of fashion images from concept to presentation. They will gain knowledge of styling, photography, digital design techniques and the principles of graphic design and advertising to support their project realisation. The course aims to produce talented graduates with a real sense of motivation to stimulate the local market.
Level One grounds students in key concepts and theories in fashion and introduces a range of technical skills and creative practice. It establishes its methodological and knowledge base in Semester One before allowing students to specialise in Semester Two. Level Two of the programme directs students in the creative application of technical skills and knowledge towards a specific fashion market. It includes a wide range of projects which expose students to teamwork, individual creativity and industry-focused partnerships. Level Three focuses on independent creative practice geared towards industry. Students are expected to negotiate and realise their own projects and to collaborate with peers from other pathways for innovative and exciting outcomes.
Teaching Methods: You will attend lectures, critiques, workshops, seminars, tutorials and guest lectures. Engaging in studio work and group and solo projects will also become part of your student life. There will also be frequent industry visits and opportunities for market research.
Entry Requirements: You need to meet the minimum academic requirements and are required to attend an interview with portfolio presentation to demonstrate your creative potential. Please refer to entry requirements for more details.
