Over 800 new students will embark on a path of education and research in the arts when the new academic year begins at LASALLE College of the Arts on Monday 3 August 2009. This is a 12 percent increase in intake for the College over the previous academic year’s figures. 39 percent of these new students are international students from countries including Brazil, Croatia, Greece, Slovakia and The Netherlands.*

The fine arts, film and arts management disciplines saw the highest year-on-year increases at 89 percent, 66 percent and 48 percent respectively. The strong showing in the intake of these disciplines reflects the evolving trends of the creative industries.

Mr. Venka Purushothaman, LASALLE’s Vice President (Academic) & Provost says, “More students are also coming in with qualifications of GCE ‘A’ Levels or their equivalent and higher, choosing a future in the arts over a conventional university course. This bodes well for Singapore’s growing creative industries.” This year saw 23 percent more students in this category.**

“Intake for the Performing Arts Faculty has also done quite well with increases in specialisations like Jazz and Technical Theatre. These industries are believed to be growth areas with potential jobs coming from the Integrated Resorts and other regional possibilities,” added Mr. Purushothaman.

Open University validated programmes

Students at LASALLE undergo a rigorous training where they learn to become independent and confident professionals of the creative industries. Even before graduation in September 2009, a group of recent graduates from the College’s Acting programme have demonstrated the qualities of their LASALLE training by setting up their own theatre company. The company will stage their first production, “Happiness”, from 29 Jul to 2 Aug 2009 and LASALLE is helping them by sponsoring the venues for their rehearsals and performances.

LASALLE is an accredited and partner institution of the Open University, and all programmes are developed and delivered by the College and bear a UK-benchmarked stamp of quality. To retain the Open University accreditation, the College has to undertake a detailed audit ever five years, with the most recent one that began in the last quarter of 2008 expected to end this year.
