Berita Harian 2 – Utusan Melayu; The Surreal, The Contemporeal, The Cosmoreal is an attempt to initiate a legacy of artistic platforms reflective to the study of ‘Malayness’. The event-based exhibition features nine contemporary Malay artists of various disciplines selected by curator / LASALLE’s MA Fine Arts candidate Zaki Razak. It aims to convey enquiries in regards to anthropology of ‘Melayu’, projects issues that are deemed as taboos by the general Malay society and explores alternative means of artistic productions. Berita Harian 2 – Utusan Melayu closes with modest refreshments – possibly ‘teh tarik’ and banana fritters, a closing act by Noor Effendy Ibrahim’s Study in reading #36, the launch of the exhibition’s catalogue and a publication by Gene Sha Rudyn on 5 February at 7pm.

Symposium
MALAY NEWSPAPERS: SHIFTING FUNCTIONS AND REPRESENTATIONS Tue 12 Jan, 7.30 – 9.30pm

The symposium involves the meeting of minds between artists and academics – a sharing session touching on the function of Malay newspapers in pre-independence and contemporary Singapore.

The aim of the session is to reflect on the role of art in contemporary life. Why do we make art? How can art be a channel to reform society? Should art be a form of indulgence or should it be used for the betterment of society? Art, for Who’s sake? At the expense of whom?

What The F Are You Guys About? is a talk by the curators, Syed Mohd Khairudin Aljunied and Zaki Razak.

THE THEATRE OF DAILY LIFE BY GENE SHA RUDYN Sat 30 Jan, 2– 6pm F307, Block F Level 3 #F307, LASALLE College of the Arts, 1 McNally Street Can day-to-day experiences be presented in a theatrical performance? In this performative workshop, learn to identify what is theatrical about ‘life’ and understand how to present it as a performance! This workshop is open to anyone who desires to present ‘life’ as a performance.
