What makes a city? Is modernisation necessary for the progress of a country? On 10 Nov, ten international Fine Arts graduates gathered in LASALLE to examine the impact of modernity in Asia within the dichotomies of urban and rural in Tropical Lab. Tropical Lab has been an intensive but highly simulating and engaging ten-day workshop ending with an exhibition drawing from geo-political differences and diverse artistic practices through representatives from Turkey, United States, Indonesia, Philippines and United Kingdom. Setting immediate and subtle contrasts of metropolitan and rustic life, the workshop consists of fieldtrips to Pulau Ubin and Singapore Biennale 2008, a series of artist talks as well as dialogue sessions with selected LASALLE MA candidates. The result is group exhibitions reflecting artistic collaborations and discourses of spaces which might alter our perceptions of LASALLE campus architecture.
This exhibition is curated by guest curators and art historians Ms Biljana Tomic and Ms Dobrila Denegri and presented by LASALLE’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
