ABOUT THE PROJECT

American-based On Kawara, who is of Japanese descent, is one of the world’s most respected and influential conceptual artists. Kawara’s artistic practices are essentially a document of his own existence in time and its meaning. The obsessive and fastidious manner in which he performs this self-documentation is driven by an existentialist impulse and by doubts of his own existence, thus the need to document every aspect.

One Million Years - Past and One Million Years - Future are two complementary works charting the passage of time. Each work consists of thousands of pages of year dates written in chronological order, one stretching backwards from 1969 and the other forwards from 1981. Here, the length of an average human life is equivalent to a few lines; human history, a few pages.

The exhibition On Kawara: Consciousness. Meditation. Watcher on the Hills at Earl Lu Gallery in 2004 presented a 24-hour reading of Kawara’s One Million Years. As part of an ongoing work by the artist, ICA Singapore is producing boxed sets of eight compact discs (four from the Past and four from the Future), which will be available as a limited edition of 250 sets.

ICA Singapore’s production is part of a series of readings organised by various international galleries and organisations, and continues from previous editions as follows:
