About LASALLE

  1. How did “LASALLE” come to be the name of the Institution?

The Institution was founded in 1984 by Brother Joseph McNally, a Brother of the De La Salle order. From its humble beginnings as a small arts centre at the St Patrick's School premises, the Institution expanded and in 1992 was re-named "LASALLE College of the Arts". In 1993, "SIA" was added to the Institution's name in recognition of Singapore Airlines' contribution of S$15 million towards the construction of two new buildings at the previous Mountbatten campus.

  2. Is LASALLE a private institution?

LASALLE is a non-profit, private educational institution. The Institution currently operates autonomously with financial support from the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE). Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are eligible for subsidised fees with tuition grant from the MOE.

The Institution offers the widest range of programmes in practice-based arts - Fine Arts, Design, Performing Arts and Arts Management - in Singapore from Foundation to Master's degree. PhD programmes are planned to commence in the near future.

As a result of a major capital contribution from the Singapore government, LASALLE successfully moved to a City Campus in 2006 which provides world-class teaching, learning and research facilities.

  3. How is LASALLE different from other institutions that offer an education in the arts & design?

A fundamental difference is that LASALLE focuses on the contemporary arts, offering the most comprehensive range of arts education programmes in Singapore with a complete academic-creative path from Diploma to Master's degree. PhD programmes are planned to commence in the near future.

LASALLE received its Accredited Institution status granted by The Open University, UK 's largest university, in March 2004. The institutional accreditation and degree validation by The Open University Validation Services (OUVS) is an independent stamp of approval of academic quality from an internationally-recognised accrediting body operating under a UK Royal Charter. All degree programmes offered from July 2004 are written and developed by LASALLE. Students completing these degrees programmes developed by LASALLE and validated by OUVS will receive a parchment that will jointly bear the name and seal of LASALLE and The Open University, clearly identifying LASALLE as the provider and The Open University bringing validation equivalent to United Kingdom MA, BA (Hons) or DipHE (Diploma in Higher Education).

With a unique teaching philosophy that emphasises both theory and practice, students at LASALLE are exposed to a learning environment that includes being taught by faculty who as well as being experienced educators are practising professionals, working with invited international artists, designers and performers, and participating in a dynamic programme of cutting-edge exhibitions and performances. As the region's only integrated arts campus, students have the exceptional benefit of interdisciplinary interaction and a holistic approach to learning.

Our Fees

  1. As LASALLE is a private institution, are fees much higher than that at the government institutions?

In late 1998, the Singapore government announced plans to upgrade LASALLE to play a central role in the development of creative and artistic manpower in Singapore. The upgrading plans included granting LASALLE with financial support from the Ministry of Education. Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are eligible for subsidised fees for programmes in Foundation, Level 1 and Level 2 under the Ministry of Education’s Tuition Grant Scheme.

Click here for more information on Fees.

Case Trust

  1. Why is LASALLE exempted from CaseTrust for Education scheme?

CaseTrust for Education scheme was developed as an assurance scheme to protect international students attending private commercial schools in Singapore.

As LASALLE is a non-profit, private educational institution receiving financial support from the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE), we are therefore not required to participate in this scheme as with other publicly funded educational institutions in Singapore.

For more information on LASALLE’s exemption from the Case Trust for Education’s Student Protection Scheme, please refer to the Singapore Education website at: http://www.singaporeedu.gov.sg/htm/stu/stu0108.htm
